International Symposium on Water and Wetlands in the Mediterranean: Updated programme and the Agadir Commitments
The International Symposium on Water and Wetlands in the Mediterranean has been placed under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI of Morocco, who has mandated HRH Princess Lalla Hasna, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, to chair the opening ceremony of this event.

Workshop on the MedWet Inventory Tools
Consolidating the important and long standing work done on a Mediterranean wetland inventory system
MedWet has played a major role regarding the definition of wetland inventory and monitoring system in the last two decades, through a series of projects implemented by the members and partners. To better promote and enhance the tools whose use has not been optimal, a workshop was organised by the MedWet Secretariat which gathered key figures involved in their development over the years.

The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards 2012
Luc Hoffmann and Thymio Papayannis among the winners.
In the COP11 in Bucharest, Romania in July 2012 the fifth edition of the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards will be presented. It gives us great pleasure to announce that Mr Thymio Papayannis and Dr Luc Hoffmann, both key figures in the creation and establishment of the MedWet Initiative and still Honorary MedWet members, will be awarded a Recognition of Achievement award and a 40th Anniversary Honorary Ramsar Award respectively.

A tribute to “Man, Wetlands and Water”
An activity to raise awareness on wetlands, cultural heritage and the role of Man.
MedWet, the French Institute of Greece and the Athens Ethnographic Film Festival organized a tribute to “Man, Wetlands and Water”. The event consisted of a morning session addressed to school children and an evening session addressed to the general public. The morning was designed to be a fun activity in order to introduce students to wetlands and ethnographic films. The evening session saw the screening of two ethnographic films centered around water and wetlands and two presentations.

Engaging civil society in integrated water management
in southern and eastern Mediterranean region
Wetlands International, funded by CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) has established a project to improve the participation of civil society in dialogue with governments in charge of wetlands and water management. This regional project has just ended and during its closing roundtable meeting in December 2011, the national partners presented the following results that they have achieved.

Local development plans
An indispensable tool for reinforcing respect for the new zoning of the El Kala National Park
As part of the study contract for updating the zoning of El Kala funded by the Directorate General of Forests, the National Centre for Study and Analysis of Population and Development (CENEAP) invited the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory wetlands (MWO) / Tour du Valat to participate in the presentation of the preliminary results of the study in El Kala and Algiers.

MedWet is a Regional Initiative for the Ramsar Convention on wetlands. It is a partnership of twenty-seven Mediterranean countries, wetland centres, intergovernmental organisations and international, environmental NGO’s. The Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory is a unique monitoring and evaluation system, based on a broad partnership. The Tour du Valat has been mandated by MedWet to develop this observatory and to catalyze the partnership
