Ramsar COP11: Coordinating global action for the conservation and wise use of wetlands
The 11th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands took place in Bucharest, Romania from the 6th to 13th July 2012. The 11th meeting of the Mediterranean Wetlands Committee (MedWet/Com11) took place in parallel on the 5th July, along with the regional meetings. The Ramsar COP11 brought together a large number of delegates and various resolutions were discussed and adopted.

Strategic Action Programme for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean Region
4th Meeting of the Advisory Committee
The meeting took place in Malaga, Spain on the 4th July 2012 and its aim was to discuss the SAP-BIO update in relation to the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and ecosystem approach. The Secretariat provided information on the progress made in its implementation and the participants presented their respective organisations priorities in relation to the SAP-BIO fields of action.

IUCN Workshop on the Protected Areas of Montenegro
Collaboration on the issue of planning and management of protected areas
The MedWet Coordinator participated in the Workshop organised by the IUCN and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism of Montenegro on 16th to 18th of July. Issues discussed in this workshop covered both the Adriatic region and the specific situation in Montenegro on the issue of planning and management of protected areas.

Not all equal for Ramsar
As part of the MWO’s work, a study conducted in 2012 aimed at a better understanding of the correlations between Ramsar designated wetlands, protection and management at the national level, types of habitat and size of these wetlands, as well as assessing the pertinence of conservation choices vis-à-vis the associated biodiversity.

It is a partnership of twenty-seven Mediterranean countries, wetland centres, intergovernmental organisations and international, environmental NGO’s. The Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory is a unique monitoring and evaluation system, based on a broad partnership. The Tour du Valat has been mandated by MedWet to develop this observatory and to catalyze the partnership
